An Introduction To John Dowland

This programme analyses in considerable detail a song, Can She Excuse my Wrongs? by the leading Elizabethan lutenist and composer John Dowland, in an attempt to throw light on the general approach to the setting of words taken by composers of the period. There is an historical introduction to Dowland himself, and the song is performed both in its version for solo voices and lute accompaniment and in its version of four voices. The singers are in Elizabethan costume and, in the case of the solo singer and lutenist, an Elizabethan setting: Manor Turret House, where Mary Queen of Scots was incarcerated.
