In early 2011, we will launch the first release of JISC MediaHub as a new multimedia service offering a wealth of digital image, film and sound collections accessible from a single interface.  The new service will offer access to free-at-the-point-of-use images, film and sound content licensed for educational and research use, an easy-to-use interface, cross-searching across all the collections and the ability to source content from a wide range of content-providers through a thumbnail and metadata search portal.

Available via institutional subscription, the new service will include paid-for and free content:

Paid-for

The Digital Images for Education collections, http://imagesforeducation.org.uk/ –  over 500 hours of film and 56,000 images from 11 collections, capturing local, UK and world history during the last 25 years. Films include footage from Gorbachev’s accession to power in the Soviet Union in 1985 to the financial crisis of 2009, powerful raw footage of the 9/11 attacks as well as coverage of key issues such as deforestation and global warming.  Photographs from a wide variety of providers range from 19th-century life in the Scottish Highlands to contemporary youth culture.

Free (until at least July 2012)

ITN NewsFilm Online (formerly the NewsFilm Online service) –  3,000 hours of news stories and cinema newsreels taken from the ITN/ Reuters archive.  Over 60,000 clips are available covering significant historical events that shaped the 20th and 21st century such as the Crystal Palace fire, the first interview with Nelson Mandela, and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

External collections (formerly the VSM Portal Demonstrator Project) –
We hope to open discussions with existing providers to the VSM portal regarding the future. Whatever the outcome, the difference between paid and free services will remain the same.
